HAMMAR H20R HYDROSTATIC RELEASE FOR LIFERAFT, USCG/EC

The Hammar Easy Release slip hook system is designed to be safe and easy to use in order to increase the possibilities to manually release liferafts and save lives. The Hammar Easy Release has several strong advantages:

  • Strong construction in stainless steel, that will withstand 15 kN lashing load.
  • Easy to release even under high lashing load.
  • Easy to release with only one hand.
  • Economical priced

The new generation H20 model has a Red Weak Link connector with a 3-step coupling device. By eliminating the risk of incorrect installation, we have now made it even safer. The Hammar H20 is a hydrostatic release unit designed to fit liferafts of all shapes and  sizes. It is made of glass fibre reinforced nylon, which prevents it from corroding. The Hammar H20 needs no annual service, maintenance or spare parts. You simply install a new one every two years and dispose of the old one. With the environment in mind, the old unit is 97% recyclable.

Thanks to simple handling procedures, storage costs are also kept to a minimum. The H20 enables easier, quicker, trouble-free  installation, thereby considerably reducing your customers’ downtime ashore.

Compared with conventional release units, the Hammar H20 offers savings of up to 50% over a 10-year period. The Hammar H20 is the best-selling hydrostatic release unit in the world. Its safe, reliable and simple design has earned it more worldwide approvals than any other unit. In fact, it’s a small wonder!

So, if you want to make a sizeable difference to your economy, insist on installing the Hammar H20, the small release unit that gives you the big deal.

WHAT DOES AN HRU DO?

If the vessel sinks, the increasing water pressure activates the Hammar H20. It automatically releases the liferafts, EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons), or other life-saving appliances it is connected to.

The Hammar H20 is designed to be safe and reliable in all extreme conditions that you and your ship might meet on the oceans. The Manual Release Units (MRU) and Electronic Release Units (ERU) allow for a smooth, controlled release in an early stage of abandoning the ship without compromising the hydrostatic function.

A lashed liferaft will follow the ship down if no mechanism is there to release the lashing; this is the purpose of an HRU. All vessels complying with the SOLAS (Safety for Life at Sea) regulation are obliged to have HRUs on sufficient liferafts for saving the personnel onboard. Not only will the SOLAS HRU release the liferaft, but the Weak Link™ connected to the raft's painter line also activates the liferaft after release, making it available to survivors to board.

The Hammar H20 White Strong Rope withstands forces up to 15kN, and the HRU should release at a depth of between 1,5 to 4 meters. Once the liferaft is set free, the Weak Link™ should hold the painter line to the force of 2,2kN (+/- 0,4kN).

SOLAS defines two different types of HRUs:

  • Non-disposable, which require service yearly and are generally made of metal.
  • Disposable, which require no maintenance during its lifetime of 24 or 30 months, such as the Hammar H20.

THE HAMMAR H20 - HOW IT WORKS

Inside the Hammar H20, a pin under tension sits in a notch of a spring-loaded knife. The pin is attached to the center of a flexible membrane. At the intended depth, water acts on the membrane pushing it inwards and out of the notch. When the pin is fully out of the notch, the blade can instantly spring forward, cutting through the strong rope and releasing the lashing.

The Weak Link™ holds the painter line assuring the necessary pull to inflate the raft as the buoyancy of the liferaft container floats towards the surface. The increased buoyancy of the inflated liferaft will cause the Weak Link™ to break, and the raft can surface.

The Hammar H20 is designed to cut through the White Strong Rope but may, in some applications, also cut the unshielded electrical cable.

The Hammar H20 is an HRU designed to fit liferafts of all shapes and sizes. It is made of glass fiber reinforced nylon, which prevents it from corroding. The H20 needs no annual service, maintenance, or spare parts. You simply install a new unit and dispose of the old once it has reached the end of service life.

The Hammar H20 White Strong Rope is secured to the deck or liferaft cradle and attached to the liferaft lashing with a slip hook. If the ship sinks, the water pressure will, within four meters, activate the sharp knife, which cuts the rope, and the liferaft will float free. As the ship sinks, the liferaft painter line will stretch, and the liferaft starts to inflate. The Red Weak Link™ breaks, and survivors can board the floating liferaft.

The Hammar H20 R consists of a looped white rope line, a release mechanism, and a Red Weak Link™ (breaking strength 2,2 ± 0,4kN). The breaking strength of the H20 R is 15kN.

Lifetime

The H20 is available in a 24 month (H20 R) and a 30 month (H20 RX) operational life option. An H20 may be stored for up to five years (shelf life) from manufacturing before installed onboard. It should be stored in its box in a dry, temperature regulated, and UV-protected environment.

Approvals

The SOLAS 74/96 Convention states that life-saving appliances should comply with the LSA (Life-Saving Appliances) Code's applicable requirements (as amended by IMO Resolution MSC. 48(66)). LSA is subject to General Requirements in LSA-Code ch 1.2. You will find requirements such as that the product should not be damaged in air temperatures in the range of -30°C to +65°C and that it should be resistant to corrosion and deterioration when exposed to sunlight. The requirements for Float Free Arrangements for Liferafts are found in the LSA Code in chapter 4.1.6 and Hydrostatic Release Unit in chapter 4.1.6.3. All Hammar H20 R are suitable for all SOLAS liferafts, even those with a capacity of over 25 persons.

All Hammar H20 units are approved all over the world and fulfill the requirements of:

  • SOLAS 74 Convention as amended, Regulations III/4, X/3, III/13, III/26, and III/34
  • IMO Res. MSC.48(66) -(LSA Code)- amended by MSC.207(81), MSC.218(82), MSC.272(85), MSC.293(87), MSC.320(89), MSC.368(93) and MSC.425(98) I, IV
  • IMO Res. MSC.36(63) -(1994 HSC Code)- as amended, 8
  • IMO Res. MSC.97(73) -(2000 HSC Code)- as amended, 8
