Inertia controlled reels / blocks (similar to a car seat belt action) is also commonly known as SRL (Self Retractable Lifeline).  The harness is attached to a self-reeling cable forming part of a block in which there is an arrester device.  The block is secured to a suitable overhead anchorage point.  The wearer is free to move in any direction permitted by the self-reeling cable.  However, care should be exercised in the choice of anchorage point to prevent pendulum action in the event of a fall.

Safety is one of the key factors when working at heights. An employee hanging on the rope or in the harness is exposed to the risk of falling from a dozen or more meters. In order to guarantee adequate protection and eliminate the risk of accidents resulting from carelessness or equipment failure, it’s recommended to use special retractable type and guided type fall arresters.

The self-locking mechanism reduces the impact force and automatically stops the fall when a worker slips or falls with a sudden tension. Housing is made of durable glassfibre and drum-wound lifeline is made of stainless steel. Work load is less than 130 kgs. Workers using fall arrester must work directly under the anchorage to prevent swing fall injuries.

1. Fall Prevention & Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS)
To protect a worker from reaching an unguarded edge (restraint) or safely stopping them during a fall (arrest), the mandatory onboard equipment kit must contain:
  • Full-Body Harnesses: “A fall arrest kit or a fall recovery kit can include pre-packaged kit such as a harness - most often a full-body harness with leg loops, shoulder and chest straps.” It must feature multiple attachment points (D-rings on back and chest). [1]
  • Shock-Absorbing Lanyards: Flexible connecting lines fitted with a built-in energy absorber. This mechanical device is critical to “absorbing energy and limiting the forces applied to the user's body” to safe levels during an arrest. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs) / Personal Fall Limiters: Automatic mechanical lifelines that immediately tension and “lock in the event of a sudden movement or fall, similar to a seatbelt.” These are required for areas with restricted fall clearance. [1, 2]
  • Anchorage Connectors & Lifelines: Certified portable beams anchors, slings, and heavy-duty synthetic or steel horizontal/vertical lifelines designed to safely withstand dynamic forces. [1, 2]
2. Height & Enclosed Space Rescue Equipment
Because a suspended worker risks life-threatening suspension trauma within minutes, the required emergency response gear includes:
  • Tripod and Winch Assembly: A lightweight, high-strength rescue tripod stand certified for man-riding and extraction operations. It must feature an integrated “rescue lifting/ lowering device (w/pulley)” and a high-tensile steel wire rope to hoist incapacitated crew members upward.
  • Rescue Pole Kit: An extendable telescoping pole fitted with specialized catch hooks. This “enables the rescuer to remove a person from danger” remotely by capturing their harness D-ring without the rescuer having to step into the hazard zone. [1, 2]
  • Hoisting Stretcher (Neil Robertson or Basket Type): A rigid, specialized stretcher kept in a “readily accessible location” that is legally required and specifically “suitable for hoisting an injured person from spaces below deck” (such as a cargo hold or pump room).
  • Suspension Trauma Relief Straps: Small webbed foot-loops attached directly to the full-body harness. They allow a suspended conscious victim to stand up and relieve deadly venous blood pooling in the legs while waiting for the rescue team.
3. Regulatory Maintenance & Safety Factors
  • Pre-use Inspection: All onboard safety lines, gear, and harnesses must undergo mandatory inspections by a competent crew member before every single deployment.
  • Retirement Criteria: Any personal fall protection gear or rescue rope that has been subjected to the dynamic load of an actual fall or an operational accident must be permanently retired from service immediately

• Worker training: Deploy only workers who have successfully completed the Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) Perform Work at Height course to work on roofs. Train workers to always anchor their safety harnesses when working at height.

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Equip roof workers with anti-slip safety footwear and fall-arrest or travel-restraint equipment along with secure anchor point(s) or lifeline.

Note that the use of a standard lanyard with a shock absorber cannot be used if the fall clearance distance is too short to safely stop one’s fall before striking the ground. If the fall clearance distance is too short, the use of an immediate arrest self-retracting line is recommended.
