IBC Code Reg 14.2.2 outlines the requirements for the safety equipment to be carried on ships transporting certain hazardous chemicals. Specifically, it details the components of one complete set of safety equipment, including a self-contained breathing apparatus, protective clothing, and a lifeline. This equipment is intended to allow personnel to enter and work in a gas-filled space safely.
Here's a breakdown of the requirements:
  • Minimum Quantity: Ships carrying cargoes requiring specific entries in the IBC Code (Chapter 17, column o) must carry at least three complete sets of safety equipment.
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA): One set of safety equipment must include an SCBA with a capacity of at least 1,200 liters of free air, not using stored oxygen.
  • Protective Clothing: The equipment includes protective clothing, boots, gloves, and tight-fitting goggles, all designed to provide adequate protection against the specific chemicals being carried.
  • Lifeline: A steel-cored rescue line with a belt is required for rescue purposes.
  • Explosion-Proof Lamp: An explosion-proof lamp is also included as part of the safety equipment.
  • Cargo Specificity: If the ship carries toxic cargoes, the protective suits must be capable of providing adequate protection against those specific chemicals, as indicated in the manufacturer's resistance table, according to ScribdThe responsible officer must be aware of the limitations of the protective suits concerning the carried cargoes.
Essentially, the IBC Code Reg 14.2.2 ensures that chemical tankers have the necessary equipment to protect their crew during potentially hazardous operations involving the handling and transport of dangerous chemicals.
A BA system for confined spaces provides a source of breathable air to prevent oxygen deficiency and protect workers from toxic atmospheres, typically using Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for autonomy or Airline Breathing Apparatus for extended work durations. Systems include a face mask, a pressure-reducing valve, an air cylinder or airline supply, and a hose connecting them, with features like anti-panic systems and communication for safety. The choice between SCBA and airline systems depends on the duration, complexity, and specific hazards of the confined space.
